Synopsis

The monograph “Psychological Aspects of Digraphia” explores the complex relationship between language, writing systems, and cognitive processes underlying reading and writing, with a particular focus on the phenomenon of digraphia. Starting from a broader framework of writing systems and their historical development, the book examines the main types of writing systems, their structural and functional characteristics, and the ways in which they are processed within the human cognitive system. Special attention is devoted to alphabetic writing systems, given their widespread use and significance, as well as to the specificity of the Serbian language, which is characterized by digraphia—the equal use of both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. In this context, the monograph analyzes the relationship between digraphia and the mental lexicon, reading and writing processes, as well as individual script preferences. The book also provides an overview of empirical research on digraphia in the Serbian language, including analyses of script representation in public spaces, graphemic and typographic characteristics, and the role of digraphia in understanding phonological processes. Additionally, it addresses the neural correlates of script processing and the relationship between digraphia and bilingualism, situating this phenomenon within a broader cognitive and neuroscientific framework.
