Synopsis

The monograph Ekphrasis in the Poetic Narrative of Tacitus’ Annals is an attempt to explore the various aspects and dimensions of ekphrasis – from its roots in classical literature to Tacitus’ interpretation and its application in the Annals. Through carefully selected examples, theories and analyses, the complex nature of ekphrasis and its role in literature is presented. Ekphrasis, as a segment of artistic creativity, allows for a deeper understanding of the relationship between language and image. The Annals present historical events related to the early Roman Empire and the city of Rome in poetically vivid form. In describing battles and political events, Tacitus used vivid descriptions to convey the atmosphere, setting and emotions that shaped historical events.
