From sensation to perception: Neuroscientific aspects

This monograph represents the second publication within the Mosaic Edition, dedicated to neurosciences, and is a natural continuation of the previous edition. As emphasized in the final chapter of the first publication, the text at the time did not represent the end of thinking about the relationship between brain structures and cognitive functions, but a starting point for a deeper, thematically oriented consideration of individual cognitive processes. In this sense, this book focuses on perception as one of the fundamental functions through which the connection between brain, body and environment is established. The first chapter of the monograph starts from the idea that the senses are the bridge between the organism and the world. In the second chapter, the focus shifts from the peripheral sense organs to the brain as the central place of information processing. The third chapter is devoted to perceptual illusions, which represent a particularly valuable research tool. The fourth chapter introduces a developmental perspective and looks at perception across the life span – from early childhood to adulthood. Chapter 5 discusses the relationship between neurological disorders and perception. The final chapter of this monograph is directed towards modern technologies and their role in the research of perception.
