Emotions and Motivation in the Recovery Process
Keywords:
Emotions, motivation, addiction, recovery processSynopsis
In contemporary therapeutic approaches, the treatment of individuals with addiction is no longer viewed solely as the maintenance of abstinence. The recovery process requires an integrative approach that addresses all aspects of personality and psychological functioning. In this monograph, special emphasis is placed on the role of emotions and motivation, which are crucial not only in the development of addiction but also throughout recovery process itself. The theoretical section of the monograph outlines the key conceptual foundations in psychology, as well as their application within the recovery process.
This theoretical framework is enriched by the results of a qualitative analysis of focus groups conducted with members of a therapeutic community. These findings provided an in-depth insight into the emotional and motivational experiences of individuals in recovery, including difficulties in emotional regulation, coping mechanisms, motives for psychoactive substance use, loss of motivation, and strategies for restoring motivation.
The research findings highlight the importance of an approach that strengthens individuals’ internal resources, enhance their capacity to cope with unpleasant emotions, frustration, and stress, and thereby contribute to more enduring changes and an improved quality of life.
