AGRICULTURAL PROTECTIONISM: MEASURES AND CHALLENGES OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION
Keywords:
agricultural protectionism, agricultural policy, trade liberalization, competitiveness, food securitySynopsis
The idea for writing this monograph arose from a long-standing interest in issues of agricultural policy, particularly the role of the state in protecting and developing the agricultural sector. Agriculture, as a sector of strategic importance, has always held a special place in national economic policies, as it directly affects food security, employment, and the overall stability of society. Because of this multifaceted role, agricultural protectionism remains one of the most relevant topics in contemporary economic theory and practice.
The monograph Agricultural Protectionism: Measures and Challenges of Trade Liberalization is the result of many years of scientific research, analysis of international experiences, and empirical data on support and protection measures in agriculture. It brings together theoretical insights and practical findings on how the role of the state has evolved, how reforms within GATT and the WTO have shaped the scope of agricultural policy, and how these changes have influenced the competitiveness of agriculture, particularly in developing and transition economies.
The aim of the monograph is not only to provide an analysis of the instruments and effects of protectionism but also to encourage a broader academic and professional discussion on the balance between market liberalization and the need to protect the agricultural sector. At a time when issues of food security, sustainability, and climate change are gaining a global dimension, understanding these processes is more important than ever.
