Synopsis

The book "Periodontitis and Systemic Diseases" presents an original presentation of the undeniable, most often bidirectional connection between periodontal tissue inflammation and changes and damage in the entire organism. Namely, the results of several preclinical researches, clinical and epidemiological studies conducted in the previous period indicated a connection between periodontitis and a number of systemic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. Consequently, periodontitis affects the occurrence and development of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular, malignant, metabolic and neurological diseases, as well as diseases of the respiratory tract, unwanted pregnancy outcomes and many other diseases. Therefore, in addition to its importance in dentistry, periodontal disease is gaining importance as a public health problem, affecting diseases associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The topic of this monograph is very current, because it presents to the professional public a completely new scientific field called "periodontal medicine".
