Synopsis

The monograph Youth Health – Challenges and Perspectives provides a comprehensive overview of the health status, needs, and challenges faced by young people in contemporary society. It is based on the premise that adolescence and youth represent a critical period for the development of habits, behaviors, and lifestyles that significantly influence health outcomes throughout the life course.

Particular attention is given to epidemiological evidence showing that injuries, violence, mental health disorders, substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and unhealthy lifestyles are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among young people. At the same time, the monograph emphasizes that most of these problems are preventable through timely interventions, effective prevention strategies, and improved access to health services.

The concept of health is examined through a modern biopsychosocial perspective, highlighting the importance of the social determinants of health. Factors such as poverty, education, housing conditions, family support, social inclusion, and access to healthcare significantly shape health outcomes among adolescents and young adults. Inequalities in these determinants contribute to substantial disparities in both physical and mental health.

A major focus of the monograph is mental health, recognized as one of the most pressing public health issues affecting young people today. Adolescence is characterized by profound biological, emotional, and social changes, making young people particularly vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. The support provided by families, schools, peers, and communities is identified as a key protective factor that promotes resilience and well-being.

The central message of the monograph is that investing in youth health means investing in the future of society. Improving youth health requires a multisectoral approach that integrates the health, education, and social sectors while promoting evidence-based policies and interventions tailored to the real needs of young people. Such efforts are essential for fostering healthier individuals, stronger communities, and sustainable social development.
