Synopsis

The monograph Oversight of Police Work presents a comprehensive scientific and expert analysis of the mechanisms of police supervision and control as one of the key conditions for the lawful, professional and responsible performance of police work in a democratic society. Starting from the importance of the police as a state body with special powers and means of coercion, the authors consider the need to establish efficient control mechanisms that ensure the protection of human rights and freedoms, strengthen the rule of law and improve public confidence in the work of the police.

The content of the monograph is systematized through several interconnected thematic units in which the concept and role of the police, democratic oversight of the security sector, the position of the police officer in the criminal law system, as well as theoretical and practical aspects of police control are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the types and means of control, models of ensuring police accountability, external and internal oversight mechanisms, including parliamentary, judicial, administrative, civil and institutional control, as well as internal procedures of professional accountability and disciplinary supervision.

The monograph deals in detail with the system of supervision and control of the Police of the Republic of Srpska, analyzing the role of the judiciary, legislative and executive authorities, ombudsmen, non-governmental organizations and the public in the process of police control. A special part of the publication is dedicated to inspection supervision, forums for citizen security, comparative models of police control in European countries and European principles of police supervision.

By linking theoretical considerations, international standards and practical experiences, the monograph represents a significant contribution to the understanding of the system of police accountability and modern mechanisms of police control. It is intended for students of the Faculty of Security Sciences, researchers, police officers and all experts dealing with issues of security, human rights and democratic governance of the security sector.
